Christmas- Navidad

Se que hace mucho no actualizo el blog pero tengo una buena razón para ello. Ahora paso alrededor de 14 horas diarias en el trabajo y no descansamos ni los fines de semana. No es que me queje pero la verdad eso me deja muy poco tiempo libre para dibujar. Por eso aproveché esta navidad para acuarelear durante el recalentado.

So I know that I haven't updated the blog in a long time but I have a good reason for that. I have been spending around 14 hours a day at the workplace and we don't have free time not even weekends. I'm not complaining but, truth be said, that leaves me with almost no time to draw. So I could only paint a little the christmas day.

My friend Robert gave to me a sketchbook which is a very good one but cannot hold a lot of watercolor. A lady pigeon taking care of its kid so he can be warm this winter.

Ilustraciones para un Cuento - Illustrations for a short story

Estas son las tres ilustraciones que hice para el domi de una revista que está armando una amiga. El chiste era ilustrar un cuento para niños, el cual trataba de una niña que recibia una moneda magica por medio de la cual pedia que la gravedad desapareciera para que a su padre dejara de preocuparle las cosas "graves". Al final hace que todas las cosas floten. Es la primera vez que hago un encargo para una revista y, aunque aun no sabemos si se publicará, siempre es agradable hacer algo nuevo. Por cierto, es la misma revista en donde se publicaría Gazpacho (chequenlo en el blog)

Ok so this are the illustrations I made for a magazine a friend of mine is assembling. The thing was to create some pictures to illustrate a children's tale about a girl who gets a magic coin and make the gravity disappear. This is the first time I make something for a magazine and is very cool because is like doing something I already do but with a twist (oh yeah). By the way is the same magazine that (if it finally gets published) will present Gazpacho the Hamster (check it on this blog!)

Corto Maltes - Corto Maltese

Una acuarela de uno de mis personajes favoritos, Corto Maltés del siempre interesante Hugo Pratt. Traté de no hacerla copiando los dibujos de Pratt sino de memoria (mientras escuchaba The Big Bang Theory). Creo que por eso parece mas un Joan Manuel Serrat enfadado que un marinero gitano de cuento.

A watercolor based in one of my favorite fictional characters: Corto Maltese, from the always interesting Hugo Pratt. I tryed not to copy Pratt's drawings but make it by memory ( while I was listening to the Big Bang Theory) I think that's why he looks more like a mad Joan Manuel Serra (who happens to be a very good spanish singer and composer whom I really love) more than a gipsy sailor from a beautiful tale.

Night Bluebird - Pajaro Nocturno

A watercolor I made tonight while I was hearing "Terra Nova". I really enjoy what this guy J.J. Abrams is doing on TV but I just love his movies ( I almost cryed when I saw Super 8, but to be honest, I'm an easy target).

Una acuarela que hice esta noche mientras escuchaba "Terra Nova" . De verdad que me gusta lo que hace J.J. Abrams en la tele pero mas en el cine (Me encantó Super 8 pero yo soy un target facil para eso)

Dibujos que hice mientras platicaba con un amigo en el Café Grela allá en la Narvarte.  El primero es de una imagen que vi de un soldado de la Legión Extranjera, la cual si recuerdan estuvo llena de celebridades desde Laurel y Hardy el Gordo y el Flaco hasta Tom y Jerry y Jean Claude Van Damme. 

Some drawings I made while I was chatting with a friend a the Grela Cafe here in Narvarte. The first one by the way is a ink drawing of a member of the Legion of Honour, which if you remember was full of celebrities like Laurel and Hardy, Tom and Jerry and of course Jean Claude Van Damme.

Napoleon y su increible maquina voladora - Napoleon and his incredible flying machine

Napoleón contribuyó con esta entrada (si usted amable lector no sabe quien es Napoleón le sugiero revise este enlace http://architectureinnomansland.blogspot.com/search/label/Bonahamster ) En la primera imagen lo podemos ver a el surcando los cielos con su Increíble Maquina Voladora (Es una increíble maquina voladora por que nos sigue maravillando que esa cosa vuele). En viajes recientes el ha utilizado dicha maquina para viajar a Polonia. En realidad el odia Polonia pero queria demostrar que, el odio, no puede contra la fuerza creativa de un hamster. Ni quien le diga nada.

Esta es la segunda contribución hecha por Napoleón al blog. Es una pequeña acuarela que hice basado en sus instrucciones sobre como debe ser un restaurante donde sirvan ¿Adivinaron? si, pescado. Cuando traté de explicarle que Frank Gehry ya había pensado en lo mismo que él hacía muchos años me mordió un dedo. Decidí dejar en paz el asunto.

Napoleon made a contribution this time (If you my kind reader don't know who Napoleon Bonahamster is please follow this link http://architectureinnomansland.blogspot.com/search/label/Bonahamster ) In the first image we can see Napoleon crossing the sky in his Incredible Flying Machine ( We call it the Incredible Flying Machine because is incredible that that machine can fly). He used it in a recent flight to Poland. In fact he actually hates Poland, but he was trying to prove that hate is not an obstacle for a hamster's creative force. No one can argue that.

The second is a watercolor that I made based on Napoleon instructions about how should it be a restaurant where you can eat...Guess? that's right, fish. When I tried to explain him that Frank Gehry has already taught the same thing years ago he bit me. I decided leave that topic for good.

Sketches del 2009 - Sketches from the 2009

Unas acuarelas que hice en casa de mi tio en el 2009 me parece. Cada vez que tengo vacaciones aprovecho para ir con el una temporada por que es como mi sifu. En el segundo se puede ver una caja de Pronto junto a su cajetilla de Benson and Hedges (antes claro de que tuvieran que llevar una rata muerta o un feto). Tambien hay unas hormigas guerreras porque recuerdo que en ese entonces estaba leyendo a Ursula LeGuinn lo que me inspiraba a pensar en historias de fantasia ...y algunas incluian hormigas guerreras.

Some watercolors I made at my uncle's home on the 2009. Everytime I have vacations I go to spend some time with him because he is kinda my sifu. On the second one you can see a box of Pronto (the stuff we use here in Mexico to make hotcakes) nearby his pack of Benson and Hedges (note from the author: Here in Mexico there is a ridiculous law that forces cigarette makers to put a dead fetus or a dead rat in every pack of cigarettes just to remind smokers that somke can kill...nonsense I mean just leave the freaking smokers do whatever they want for christ sake!) There are also some ant warriors...just because I was kinda into Ursula LeGuinn and some fantasy readings that inspire me to think about that stuff.

Sketches from old favorite - Sketches de viejos favoritos

Un par de sketches que hice mientras tomaba un café en la cooperativa Tzikbal (esa misma donde estaba cuando llegaron las terapeutas sexuales de la entrada anterior). En el primero podemos ver a ese adorable par de vendedores de droga (en España les dicen "camellos" ¡Gracias Extremoduro por ampliar mi slang cosmopolita!) de Jay y el Silencioso Bob. En el segundo hay una acuarelita de un viejo favorito, el señor Corto Maltese obra del genial Hugo Pratt.

A couple of sketches that I paint while I was drinking some coffee at the Tzikbal cooperative (The One I wrote about in some old post the one of the sex therapists). On the first one we can see a couple of drug dealers Jay and Silent Bob whom I assume you all know (Damn! I really wanna go to see that new Kevin Smith film Red State ... I hope he come soon). On the second image there is a watercolor of some old favorite o mine, Corto Maltese from the great Hugo Pratt.

Old Man Watercolor - Acuarela de un viejo

Mientras platicaba con un amigo en un bar en Insurgentes hice una acuarela de un hombre sentado a unas mesas de distancia. Ese dia pedí café arabe en prensa francesa por que en realidad yo nunca bebo alcohol. En cambio al hombre se le notaban algunas copas encima. La musica era buena por que estaban sonando los Smiths y mi amigo me platicaba sobre su nueva novia que era bailarina y que no hablaba bien español mientras bebia una cerveza con regusto a frutas. Cuando nos fuimos las canciones de los Smiths se habian acabado y el hombre, con varias cervezas encima miraba fijamente un charco de cerveza que habia en la mesa. Parecia que para el, era mas bien un oceano donde las sirenas le pedian que saltara para ahogarse.


While I was chatting with some chap in a bar in Insurgentes (a pretty popular avenue here in Mexico) I made a watercolor of a man who was sitting a few tables from us. That day I order some arab coffee in a french pres because I really never drink alcohol. On the other hand, you can tell that the other guy had a few drinks on him even before we arrived. The music was good because I could hear The Smiths coming out the speakers and my friend was telling me about his new girlfriend, who was a dancer and couldn't speak spanish very well. I remember he was drinking some fruit flavored beer. When we left the Smiths stop playing and I saw the man staring at the beer he spilled on his table. He looked at it as if it were an ocean where the sirens ask him to jump and drown.

La primera acuarela del blog. La hice mientras el jardinero y yo platicábamos esperando a que se acabara la lluvia para cambiar las macetas del jardín.  El jardinero puso unas llantas para plantar en ellas unas sabilas. La imagen, por supuesto, no esta relacionada con la anecdota.

So basically this is the first watercolor in the blog. I made it while the gardener and I where waiting for the rain to stop so we can go to change the dirt of the trees on the terrace. The gardener put some tires to plant a couple of sabilas in them. The image, of course, is not related to the anecdote.

Kolibri

A friend o mine is getting married. So she asked me to draw her a kolibri (weird thing you know, girls and birds...for some reason they love em...thinking about it, what's not to love?) for her new home. So I sketched some quick watercolor kolibris to practice.

Una amiga mia se va a casar. Y por eso me pidió que le pintara un colibrí para su sala. El pequeño soliloquio en inglés sobre los colibries que escribí es futil y solo responde al humor gringo así que no lo traduciré. Pero si les diré que aquí hay unos sketches que hice de colibris para dicho próposito.
